MP thanks local election candidates and activists

Following Thursday’s local elections, in which Basildon Council was lost to No Overall Control, John Baron MP said,

“I would like to thank all candidates for standing in the local elections, and especially those in our area. Democracy only works when people put themselves forward to represent and serve their communities, and all who did so deserve our appreciation. Our thanks also go to all the activists in their teams who helped to make this possible.”

He went on to say:

“I am sorry that the Conservatives are no longer in control of Basildon Council, and some hard-working Conservative Councillors have sadly not been returned. Out on the doorstep, there was definitely understandable frustration against the Prime Minister that we did not leave the EU on 29th March as promised in our manifesto.”

Reflecting on governmental talks with Labour, John Baron MP said:

“Talking to voters, it is also clear the Brexit talks with Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party are very unpopular with Conservative supporters. I hope the Government and Prime Minister will reflect carefully on these local election results. It is imperative that we leave the EU with a clean break as soon as possible.”

Basildon Council moved from Conservative control to no-overall-control this week. Turnout was low, as voters are increasingly disillusioned with national politics. Full story here.
