Basildon has been recognising young role models in the borough with this year’s Halloween inspired Celebration of Youth Awards. The ceremony, run by young people, in partnership with Basildon Borough Council and Essex County Council, highlights the positive things young people are doing in their local area.

This year’s awards ceremony, sponsored by West & Coe Funeral Directors included nine awards: volunteering; improved behaviour; inspirational role model; act of courage/overcoming adversity; achievement in art/culture; achievement in sport/physical activity; worker recognition; young person with responsibilities; and school prefect/mentor of 2013.

Cllr Terri Sargent, Basildon Council’s cabinet member for community services, said:

“Thank you to all the local businesses who have sponsored the sixth annual Celebration of Youth Awards. Recognising the positive contribution and influence young people have in the community is something which is often overlooked, so I am pleased this event helps to highlight how special our young people are.”

The winners were nominated by other young people, teachers, parents, and anyone who working with young people. Nominations were open to individual aged between 10-19 years old, or up to 25 years old for those with additional needs, and the winner of each category received a trophy award and high street shopping vouchers.
