There have been rumours this afternoon of a suspected bomb scare in Basildon, which Gateway 97.8 can confirm are NOT TRUE. The facts are:

Four people have been overcome by fumes from a liquid which has leaked from a package in the Royal Mail building in Basildon.

A package containing a diesel fuel additive called Cetane leaked in the building. Three people have taken themselves to hospital after falling ill as a result of inhaling the fumes, a fourth person presented themselves at Basildon Ambulance Station.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the building and sealed the package to prevent further leaks before ventilating the building. Firefighters work at the scene was completed by 4:11pm.
