Gateway founder in the news

Yvonne Williams, the principal founder of Gateway 97.8 local radio station was presented with the Rotary Club of Basildon Concord’s Community Service Recognition Award in recognition of her selfless voluntary service in establishing Basildon & East Thurrock’s community radio station.

The radio station was authorised to broadcast in September 2010 and has gone from strength to strength and not only broadcasts, but is very involved in providing training for young people at their studio’s in Basildon Town Centre.

In 2011 Gateway 97.8 was the first local radio station to be presented with Prime Minister David Cameron’s “Big Society Award” at a ceremony at Downing Street and last year the radio station received the “Queens Award for voluntary service”.

President of the Rotary Club of Basildon Concord Brian Wellman said ” Yvonne works voluntary as do the team at the radio station who come from many areas of the community. It has been her vision and determination to develop a successful local radio station that has inspired others”.

The presentation took place at the Holiday Inn, Basildon on Wednesday 29th January.
