Detectives are appealing for information following a robbery in a DIY superstore car park in Basildon.

The attack happened when an 88-year-old woman was walking through Homebase car park off London Road shortly after 5:30pm on Tuesday, August 28. A man approached the woman and grabbed her around the throat which knocked her to the floor. He then stole her necklace and handbag before running off.

Investigating Officer, Dc Andy Rowley, said: “Having looked through the CCTV, it is evident that the store was quite busy at the time. This man has targeted an elderly, vulnerable woman and left her in a complete state of shock and fright. She is being supported by her family as she comes to terms with what happened to her. We’re hoping that someone saw the robbery and comes forward with information so that not only can this man be arrested but to also reassure the victim and others that he is off the streets and unable to commit a similar offence again.”

The assailant is described as white, fairly short in height and was wearing a royal-blue top, with possible yellow flashes on it.

The victim sustained a minor head injury and was treated at her nearby home by paramedics.

Anyone with information in connection with this robbery is urged to contact detectives at Basildon police station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
