Thurrock Council welcomes Windrush funding

25th March 2019
Posted by Johnny Jenkins

Thurrock Council is one of 50 community groups and local authorities across England to benefit from a £500,000 grant commemorating Windrush Day.

Local authorities and community groups, including Thurrock Council, will be allocated a share of the funding, which will be used to support school projects, street parties, theatre, exhibitions and workshops in communities across England to mark Windrush Day on 22 June and throughout the year.

The national celebration honours the anniversary of the arrival of Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948, which docked at the Port of Tilbury here in Thurrock, as well as the legacy of the Windrush generation and their descendants.

Thurrock Council will run a series of educational workshops for children and residents in dance, flag-making and puppetry between April and June. Materials created during these days will then be used for a celebratory Windrush Carnival in July.

The Windrush Day Grant Scheme – an initiative from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government – launched in November last year after the Government announced that Windrush Day would be nationally celebrated on 22 June each year.
