MP welcomes Chancellor’s support for charities

Yesterday the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak MP, announced a £750 million funding pot to ensure charities can continue their vital work during the coronavirus outbreak.

This includes directly allocating £360 million to charities supporting key services and vulnerable people, providing £370 million for small and medium-sized local charities and a minimum contribution of £20 million to the National Emergencies Trust appeal – the Government will match donations to the BBC’s upcoming ‘Big Night In’ fundraising special.

John Baron MP said

“The Government has provided extensive support to business and to help protect jobs, but support for the charitable sector has so far been missing. Many charities have been busier than ever, especially those helping vulnerable people at this difficult time, but have been struck by a drop in donations as their usual funding streams are disrupted. I therefore welcome the Chancellor’s announcement, and encourage all charities in need to apply to the schemes when they become available.”
