Breaking News: Thurrock Given Amazing Conference Reprieve

In an extraordinary twist to the football season, Gateway 97.8 Sport understands that Thurrock have amazingly been given a stay of execution in the Conference South – six weeks after their football season has finished.

The Conference board has decided that, because of financial irregularities, for which they were originally fined, Rushden & Diamonds have been expelled from both the Conference AND Conference South.

To ensure that an even number of teams remains in place for 2011/12, the league has decided that the team in the final relegation spot in the Conference South will be allowed to stay up after all. That side is, luckily enough, the Ship Lane outfit.

It is the second time in three seasons that Thurrock have been reprieved after having apparently been relegated. In 2008/09 the Fleet looked certain for the drop, only for the demise of a club elsehwere giving them another chance.

After the trauma of the past campign, which included stints from three different managers, incumbent boss Robbie Garvey will be thinking a corner has been turned. On the evidence of Thurrock’s latest amazing escape, it would appear a whole block rather than corner has been turned.
