Local Sport Fixtures – Saturday August 17th 2013

Southend United take on Northampton Town this weekend in the Sky Bet League Two at Roots Hall. Southend enjoyed a good start to the league last week away at Hartlepool United with a 1-0 win under manager Phil Brown. Northampton too enjoyed a solid start to affairs this season with a 3-1 win over Newport County.

Concord Rangers take on Basingstoke Town on Saturday in the newly renamed Skrill South Division. The visiting Basingstoke drew 2-2 away at Poole Town last week whereas the hosts enjoyed a 2-1 win over Lowestoft Town in their last venture out for Pre-Season.

Billericay Town face Thamesmead Town in their third game of their Ryman Premier League season. The Town have got off to a poor start with a draw and defeat in their first two games, the latest result – a 1-0 defeat to local side East Thurrock on Tuesday evening. Thamesmead Town suffered a heavy defeat to Lowestoft in a 5-0 thrashing by the Ryman side. They face each other at Billericay on Saturday.

Canvey Island take on Lewes FC in the Ryman League this weekend. Lewes could only muster a draw away at Hampton & Richmond Borough tying 1-1. Canvey however lost 2-1 at Cray Wanderers, both sides are looking to climb from the recent slump as they face each other on Saturday.

Local side Grays Athletic face difficult opposition in Enfield Town this weekend. Enfield have started the season strong despite a weak pre-season where they suffered an 11-0 behind closed doors defeat to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. Grays however beat Leiston 3-2 last night in the Ryman league. This game is sure to entertain.

East Thurrock (whom defeated Billericay on Tuesday night) face Kingstonian away this Saturday, Nathan Koranteng the goalscorer at Billericay. Kingstonian defeating Canvey Island 1-0 in their last outing.

In the Northern Ryman Division One this week, local side Aveley face VCD Athletic away in a difficult encounter. Aveley defeated Redbridge 2-1 in their last league fixture, VCD Athletic (the hosts) defeating Tilbury 3-2 in what turned out to be an exciting game last time out. Thurrock visit Witham Town away in this week’s Northern Ryman Division One game after just beating out Chatham Town in midweek. Witham stuffed Ware 4-2 in yet another exhilarating tie.

Local side Tilbury visit Harlow Town in another Northern Ryman Division One game. Tilbury travel on the back of a 3-2 defeat to VCD Athletic (Aveley’s competitor’s this week). The home side Harlow took part in an unbelievable 8-3 defeat of Barkingside with eight different scorers this week.

In League Challenge Cup action this weekend, local side Basildon United face Hullbridge Sports and Bowers & Pitsea challenge Takeley FC in a home cup tie.
