After a long hard days work by the athletes, and with more events still to play, here are some of the olympic top stories so far:

Mark Cavendish was unsuccessful of winning the gold for Team GB in the Cycling Road Race, despite all of the talk. He remained with his team mates leading the peloton for almost all the race. The Women’s Road Race starts tommorow and the time trials begin on Wednesday.

American Swimmer Micheal Phelps just skimmed through the heats, completing the 8th fastest time for the men’s 400m individual medley. His time was 4 mins 13 secs. American Counterpart Ryan Lochte also is through to the final, in a time of 4 mins 12 secs. In the final, Micheal Phelps didn’t even get a medal, but his rival Ryan Lochte got gold almost breaking the world record.

The First Gold Medal was issued today, and it went to Siling Yi of China in the 10mm Air Rifle. She narrowly beat Sylwia Bogacka.

China may have taken the first gold medal, but know they’ve taken the first World Record. The time was 4:28.43, set by Shiwen Ye, in the womens 400m individual medley. The same race where Kent girl Hannah Miley raced, in which she came fifth.

Finally there was a massive shock in the men’s archery. The favourites USA lost out by 1 point to the Italians. Michele Frangilli was the man who hit the vital shot for Italy to give them gold. In the bronze medal play-off, South Korea defeated Mexico.

There’s more live olympic coverage tommorow, firstly on Olympic Breakfast from 9am with Yvonne Williams.
