How to message your crush

14th February 2020

New research by Messenger from Facebook shows that people around the world engage in 20 percent more conversations on a Valentine’s Day, compared to the average day in February – that’s a whole lotta love being shared!

So, with a flurry of messages winging their way across the ether, sent and received in the name of love, how can you best ensure success in the virtual world of flirting, or even bag yourself a date in time for the 14th? Bad grammar, misspelling and poor punctuation are a bug bear for nearly 40% of Messenger users, with more than a fifth using the Queen’s English rather than colloquialisms for their opening gambit while only 10% try their hand at standing out with a memorable meme.

Being upfront is also an important detail to remember when conversing online. Vague replies are considered bad messaging etiquette by 36% – but almost a third (31%) of Messenger users in the UK say they would ignore a message if they weren’t sure whether or not the sender was being sarcastic.

Aston spoke to Katherine Lewis, etiquette expert from Debretts to discuss how to mind your P’s and Q’s online.
