Basildon has been shortlisted for UK Town of Culture 2028, placing the borough among just 15 towns nationwide selected from almost 400 applications.
The prestigious shortlist recognises Basildon’s ambitious vision to celebrate its creativity, heritage and diverse communities through culture, while using the arts to support regeneration, improve wellbeing and strengthen civic pride.
Being shortlisted is a significant achievement and reflects the strength of the borough’s cultural offer, its thriving creative sector and the collaborative work of local artists, community organisations, businesses, educational institutions and partners who came together to develop the bid.
The next stage of the process will see shortlisted towns further develop their proposals before the successful Town of Culture is announced.
Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy MP, said:
“Basildon is proving that newer towns thrive as a cultural scene, and I’m proud to see it. The bid would see the streets filled with arts and culture, and I look forward to seeing the full plans.”
The UK Town of Culture programme celebrates places where culture is helping to transform communities, boost local economies and create opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
