Anna Richardson on the supermarket price report

Do you look after the pennies to make the pounds look after themselves? New data suggests that perhaps this isn’t the case. The Real Price Report, from Aldi, reveals that Brits think groceries cost nearly 25% more than they actually do – to the tune of an extra £11.63 on the average shop.

The supermarket quizzed Brits on the price of everyday grocery items and compared these against the actual cost in supermarkets, taking an average of the prices at Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda. The events of 2020 continue to impact us all, including how we shop. Nearly one in three Brits (28%) say that, because of the pandemic, they are more aware of the cost of groceries (up from 22% in June).

Over one in ten (12%) are limiting how much they spend on groceries as a result of Covid-19, and 9% have switched supermarkets because of the pressure on household budgets.

Aston spoke to TV presenter Anna Richardson about the supermarket price report and Anna also tested Aston on how much on average some items cost in a supermarket.
