Remembering our Armed Forces heroes in a different way this weekend

This Sunday is Remembrance Sunday, and as a borough the commemoration of the event will be different this year, due to the unprecedented times we are in.

Basildon Council are encouraging people to join the nationwide campaign for a doorstep two-minute silence at 11 o clock on Sunday 8 November, and to follow the guidance of the Royal British Legion who have lots of ideas on how people can mark the event safely at home.

This week, a poppy has been added to the Basildon sign, which over the last few years has become a further way of the borough honouring our heroes of the past, present and future.

The Mayor of Basildon, Councillor David Burton-Sampson, said:

“Even through such unprecedented times, our admiration for the bravery, and our appreciation for the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers remains stronger than ever.  

“Earlier this year every Thursday night, we stood on our doorsteps, side by side with our neighbours to show our appreciation for our NHS and our key workers. We can do the same for our Armed Forces this Sunday as we observe the two-minute silence and pay our respects.  

“As a borough, we can still find a way to come together as a community, to commemorate the sacrifices of those who protected this country in our darkest hours.  

“Please stay at home and keep safe, so we can look after the health and wellbeing of all in our borough.”  

There will be a number of short, private remembrance services in memorial locations across the borough with invited guests, including members of the Armed Forces, that are being held within the current government guidance.
